Consignment in Connecticut

We want to thank a Mitzvah Mail reader for writing in to let us know about another worthwhile consignment store. Since we wrote about Jade Formals based in Roslyn, NY, and Best Dressed Secret in Livingston, NJ, we wanted to mention MINT. According to our reader, MINT is a consignment store in Greenwhich, CT, which specializes in clothing for teen girls. If you live in the area, be sure and check it out. You can also visit their Website.

Cake Topper Correction

We recently wrote about the super cool cake toppers created by Lily Tsai of Lily's Design. We mentioned that her offer is free shipping of orders of $150 or more. Please note that this applies to orders that are non cake toppers. (She also makes jewelry and other accessories.) Sorry for the confusion!

Luxe Children's Clothing

Luxury designer Peter Som created a holiday collection this year for kids. He teamed up with Best & Co., which is a children’s wear brand, and the clothing is sold at Bergdorf Goodman. I know other designers have children’s line as well. For example, Marc Jacobs has one called Little Marc Jacobs. Som’s collection includes dresses for close to $1,000 (the dress pictured here retails for $995) and a boys’ suit (including pants, shirt, vest and blazer) for $1,715.

The clothes are cute. But the prices seem steep. As the mother of a 10-month old girl, I can tell you that I am always in the market for a cute dress, yes, but I am also aware of what this child spends her day doing: smearing bananas all over her face, hair and clothing; dumping her bottle down her front; crawling across the floor at lightening speed, mop-style.

Spending $995 on a dress for your daughter’s Bat Mitzvah might make more sense. Especially when you factor in stores like Jade Formals in Roslyn, NY, and Best Dressed Secret in Livingston, NJ. These are consignment stores that will resell your high-end dresses so that maybe you can recoup some of your money, and at the same time, allow another Mitzvah Kid to enjoy your dress for her special day.

Balloon Correction

Just wanted to correct our last blog post. Balloons are NOT made of plastic, Brian Asman of Balloons Equal Fun, lets us know. Brian writes in:

"Balloons are not made from plastic. Balloons are made from the sap of trees and are 100% bio-degradable."

Cool! Thanks for the 4-1-1, Brian!

Extreme Balloon Design

We cannot get over what ballon artists like Brian Asman of Balloons Equal Fun and Asi Cohen (who owns a balloon company based in Israel!) can do with a little plastic and air. We love the caricatures Brian does for party guests and the dresses Asi makes (some posted here). Maybe they will inspire you for your Mitzvah planning!

When it comes to figuring out if your event will be balloon-friendly or not, Brian offers this advice: Please keep balloon sculptures away from sunlight, heat, sharp objects and mean people. Length of an event is usually not an issue. Some installments are meant to last for days or even weeks. In this case, a small team of artists needs to be on hand to check the sculpture every morning and make any necessary repairs.

Flour Power

We are inspired by these amazing cakes! We hope you are too! When thinking about ordering a cake for your child's Bar/Bat Mitzvah, think about a cake that might fit in with the party's theme as well as your child's personality.
